I TOTALLY jinxed myself yesterday. And the bad luck hasn’t worn off since.
So I was really hyped up for our game yesterday… I was totally ready to go and I couldn’t wait to get my hands on a ball. I got to the games super-early – early enough to watch the entire match of the teams before us, hoping that maybe one of the teams would be short a player and need me to step in. They weren’t, but this gave me extra time to mentally prepare myself… we warmed up a little and then we started playing. I was the first server for our team and my first couple serves were spot-on… and then suddenly I biffed it. I missed a serve. After I said yesterday that I haven’t missed a serve since starting the comp league… ugh. Luckily, I only missed one serve of the night. But the rest of my game was just really off. My sets were decent; in fact, everyone was complimenting my sets all night. Some of my passes were horrible, though, and the few times that I tried to get a hit in, I hit the ball out of bounds. I remarked early in the first game that it seemed like everything was moving in slow-motion. I guess it’s because we all play in the competitive league, too, where the games are much faster-paced and skillful. It’s like we forgot to play slowly – and the saying that you play to the level of your competition is totally true. Unfortunately, I wasn’t the only one having a bad game day – we all screwed up a few times and we all felt like everything was off and in slow-mo. We lost the first game, but came back to win the other 2 for the match. Plus, we met another one of our players, Fawn. She seems really awesome and I’m already comfortable around her. So we still have one more player to meet, and I’m not even sure what her name is. Theoretically, I’ll find out next week… if she shows up. This is good, though – we technically have 7 people on our team but only 6 are allowed on the court at any one time. So if someone always misses a game, no one ever has to sit out!
To continue my bad luck, my car is literally running on fumes and the little “low fuel” dinger dinged at me for the first time ever this morning on the way into work, startling me so much that I almost went through my windshield trying to stop and not hit a #1 Cochran truck. Luckily I stopped in time, but it was way too close. Last night when I got home, I grabbed my mail and part of it slipped out from between the sheets of an Ulta ad and fell into a big muddy puddle. And I keep dropping things. Chronically. Like, I can’t keep anything at all in between my mitts. Oh, and my mystery knee injury is in full swing pain-wise after last night’s awful vb game… even though I played so horribly there should be no reason for pain.
Oh well. I guess you can’t win them all… I just hope the bad luck stops before it gets ridiculous.

Smoke (or puss) gets in your eyes
Greetings!
Sorry for the little blogging vacation – I just don’t seem to have very much time these days. I have no idea what exactly has been taking up my time, but every day feels like it’s shorter and shorter.
This past Friday I was supposed to have my wisdom teeth removed. I say “supposed to” because they’re still in my mouth. I had made arrangements with my grandma for her to get off work, drive an hour to get to my house, take me to the oral surgeon’s, then take me back home and deal with my grouchy groggy self. I had also scheduled a sick day (haha, yeah, I “scheduled” a “sick” day). Grandma showed up on time and surprise! My mom decided to come with her! Yay!! We loaded ourselves into the car and headed to Fox Chapel… as we were driving over the Highland Park Bridge (literally MINUTES away from the dr’s office), my phone rang. The doc’s number. “He was called away” was what they told me… well, that’s fine, when do you want me to show up? We can hang out at the Waterworks for a little while… Nope, he won’t be coming back at all for the day. I was thisclose to completely losing it on the phone. I had done everything – fasted, taken the day off work, interrupted other peoples’ lives to have them take care of me – and suddenly it just wasn’t happening. I just don’t understand – any other times my docs have been “called away,” they’ve come back into the office and stayed late to attend to their patients. It’s just good business. And my other docs are actually *real* doctors, who have real, life-threatening surgeries to attend to. This was an oral surgeon. Seriously, what on earth would take the entire day? So yeah, to say that I was ticked is an understatement. It makes me even madder that my grandma and my mom both took the day off work for nothing. If it had been just me taking the day off, fine. But no, they won’t do the surgery without someone there in case something happens. So anyways, I continued over the bridge and ended up in their office, stormed in and got my x-rays back. I really don’t want to go back there. The dude was Dateline-creepy anyways. Now I’m in the midst of trying to figure out if my dental insurance will pay for another “initial exam” so that I can go somewhere else. If not, I’m going to have to suck it up and disrupt yet another weekend to get this done at Dateline-dude’s practice.
The high point to last Friday is the fact that 1 suckered my mom and grandma into going to not just 1 of my fave places, but 2. First up was Oakmont bakery where I got an almond macaron, just like you’d find at Fauchon in Paris!!!, a cookie monster cookie that’s STILL nearly [unbelievably] untouched in my fridge, and a “Pittsburgh crème paczki” – basically a HUGE overstuffed donut-y thing… yum. I’m currently finishing the paczki at my desk… and there’s cream filling alllll over my face. I’m so professional at work. The second highlight of the day was lunch at my fave restaurant – The Green Mango. I introduced both of them to Thai Iced Tea (holy yum!), spring rolls, and the ever-popular palate-scorcher Drunken Noodles with Chicken. For anyone reading this who doesn’t live in Pittsburgh or who has not yet experienced it’s magical menu, Drunken Noodles is a REALLY hot noodle dish with rice noodles, napa cabbage, chili flakes, some kind of spicy sauce, and I think there’s basil in it. Add some chicken and you have my favorite restaurant meal. They’re called “Drunken” noodles not because they’re made with a;c
What else is new? Nothing entirely exciting. We won last week’s competitive vb games 3-0… we won last week’s recreational vb games 3-0… we lost this week’s competitive vb games 0-3… and we have a rec game on Thursday which is going to be T-O-U-G-H. I’m liking the facts that 1. this is a short work week and 2. this is a pay week. 3. I get to play vb 2 of the 4 days I have to go to work this week.
I am definitely NOT liking the fact that I have some weird eye infection-esque thing going on that is neither an eye infection nor anything that I’ve found any cures for. I am also not liking the fact that I gave myself a black eye last Thursday. Same eye as the non-infection puss-filled eye. Yes, I literally gave myself a black eye. Looks a heck of a lot better today; in fact you can barely tell anymore. It was not so pretty Saturday and Sunday. And ok, yeah, I was secretly proud of myself for giving someone a black eye… even if it was myself. I’m so hardcore.
I’ll spare y’all the details about my revelations that a) I have abs! I actually have ABS! Abs you can see! Defined abs!! and b) my biceps were *ahem* bulging out of my arms yesterday at the gym… and last night in front of the mirror… and this morning in front of the mirror… and this afternoon in front of the bathroom mirror at work… It’s like I’m afraid they’re going to disappear if I don’t keep checking on them. :)
Ooh, and I went on a little download-spree this weekend. Now hanging out on my “new music” playlist is:
1.) Bel Biv Devoe – Poison album – includes such hits as “Do Me!” and of course “Poison.” I’d swear I had this CD when I was in 7th or 8th grade… but of course I had no idea what any of the lyrics meant… then again, I’m still not entirely sure.
2.) Slumdog Millionaire Soundtrack – includes a bunch of songs I can’t pronounce, again with lyrics I don’t understand (but for obviously different reasons than Bel Biv Devoe’s Poison). I watched the movie Wednesday night as my last redbox redblog free movie Wednesday rental, but then didn’t have time to return it before vb Thurs, so I ended up paying for it anyways. I’m pretty cool like that. Anyways, given the techno-like beats to the soundtrack, I might try running to this. The lyrics in the first song include, “They can’t touch me. We break off run so fast they can’t even catch me.” Sounds like it might do for a workout.
3.) Lily Allen – It’s Not Me, It’s You. I like “The Fear,” but I really bought this because I loved Alright, Still and listened to it for weeks on end before finally getting tired of it. I took a break from it, and now when I listen to it again, I get a little thrill like the first time I heard it. I’m expecting more of the same from this album.
4.) Some 50’s Car Show music CD that my dad bought a few weekends ago – I can’t remember what it’s called, but I love me some oldies and these songs always remind me of summer, being dragged along to car shows with mom and dad.
5.) Tone Loc – Loc-ed After Dark – There is no song that embodies my entire life more than “Wild Thing.” I listened to it as a kid at my grandma’s house, sneaking into my uncle’s bedroom and listening to his cassettes with huge dj-sized headphones while he was at his friends’ houses; I listened to it in high school; I loved it in college; and to this day, no matter how grouchy I am, hearing this sound always, without fail, puts a huge grin on my face. Funky Cold Medina’s pretty awesome, too.
6.) Joan Jett – I think I covered this in my last post, eons ago. I’m still addicted to “Do You Wanna Touch Me There (Oh Yeah).”
7.) Blind Pilot – The song “Go On, Say It.” I’m 100% sure this was an iTunes free download, but once I actually listened to it, I was craving the entire album. I’ve never heard of this group before… and I can’t find them on the free download sites, so for now I have to stick to one song. All I know is, it fit my mood perfectly, like an old sweatshirt for the soul, yesterday as I was driving in the rain/sleet/freaky April snow to my vb game. They (he?) sound like a beautiful cross between Rufus Wainwright, Guster, and I’m not sure who else. It’s amazing to my ears.
8.) Black Eyed Peas – Boom Boom Pow – I developed an awesome car dance specifically for this song. I used to hate the BEP, but their music is great for working out and getting pumped up (“I’m a beast when you turn me on, into the future cybertron. Harder, faster, better, stronger…”)…yup!
9.) Linkin Park/Jay-Z – Collision Course - Ok, I know I’m about a gazillion years late getting this one. Truth is, I love Jay-Z, but I’ve always kind of disliked Linkin Park… that is, until I downloaded Minutes to Midnight solely for “Bleed It Out,” AKA my vb anthem. Lately I’ve been hearing a lot of “Numb/Encore” and it’s really been psyching me up to work out. It’s kind of sad how working out is my prime motivator for downloading new songs.
10.) Seether – “Careless Whisper.” I was never a fan of this song in its original version… perhaps because I was too young when it came out. It just sounded too soft and mushy and icky. But although I am not at all a Seether fan (I think they’re too soft and mushy to be on The X), I’m loving their cover of this song. It just really sounds like they’re totally PO’d and I respect that. I have quite a temper on myself, so sometimes I just need “angry” music.
11.) The Ting Tings – We Started Nothing – On the exact opposite spectrum of music, this is just too poppy and happy to not love it. Ok, I guess it could get old really fast because it’s kind of annoying, but for right now, I love it. This Britpop group is quite catchy. Ever heard the song “Shut Up And Let Me Go?” Yep, that’s them. Also popular is the song “That’s Not My Name.” Good car-dancing music. Car-dancing choreography is also a huge factor in what music I download. :)
That’s it for now, sorry for the relatively boring post. Although, I guess none of my posts are really exciting. Probably because my life is lackluster. Maybe I should name this blog “This Lackluster Life.” Kind of like “This American Life,” but with a running commentary on my excruciatingly boring life. Hmm… ideas, ideas…

vacation all i ever wanted... vacation had to get away
hooray for us, we won 2 of our 3 volleyball games last night! the first game was really really close, but we ended up losing it. however, i'm pretty sure the team we played was the team who finally beat us in the finals last season, so beating them for the match was nice! also, i got to play a match before my team's match because another team was short players. it was awesome. i played with the team that was literally the worst team we'd ever played, but they were fun to play with and they have a great attitude about their skill level. i considered their match a good warm-up for my match. :) and surprisingly, whether it was due to the meds or due to my resting the past few days, i played pretty well for being injured and i had a lot of energy!
today was like the longest day ever at work. i made little vacation signs and colored them in. my boss drew a picture of my cruise ship sinking... but she had me and my mom and an unnamed really hot cabana boy in a lifeboat... but the lifeboat was very flimsy and see-through and there was a shark in the water. i get the strange feeling that they don't want me back... haha. :)
i left work a little early since i had saved up some time through the week, and i headed over to the library. i had some materials that just happened to be put on hold for me 3 days before my cruise, even though i had requested them months ago - and of course, they're all due back in one week (while i'm somewhere in the caribbean)... whatever. i got my stuff then went to my last tanning session. again, i was gonna go to the gym, but the reality of things i need to do hit me at work today - i have a gazillion things to find/pack/do before i leave for my parents' house tomorrow. it's about 11 pm now and i still haven't packed - i'm entering panic mode.
i probably won't be posting again until i come back from the cruise. i'll be hangin in ft. lauderdale, key west, ocho rios jamaica, and grand cayman. w00t!
peace in the middle east.

i'm (not) a barbie girl in a barbie world.
i gots no skillz, that's for sure.
last night after our volleyball game (we won, naturally), i ventured into downtown pittsburgh for salsa night at bossa nova at the invitation of natalie and leandra. while it was good to be sociable for the night instead of just heading home, i will say this: it's terribly difficult to go out when your friends are all zoolanders - ridiculously good-looking. although she doesn't try at all, natalie is easily one of the most gorgeous people i know. and what really sucks is that she's super nice and smart, and not stuck-up in the least, so it's impossible to hate her. leandra is also pretty, and she's colombian, so she has the accent on her side. even though i had just finished my game, i had changed my clothes, i didn't smell, and i didn't think i looked awful... the reason i had decided to go was that natalie told me that guys will come over and ask you to dance all night and that it's not a big deal if you don't know what you're doing - everyone's just there to have a good time. well, sure, that's likely true in natalie's case, but it's certainly not the case for average-looking people such as myself. guys were asking her to dance all night... and when we were hanging out and talking, guys would literally shove past me to ask her to dance. not one guy asked me to dance. i did dance one dance, quite awkwardly i might add, with a guy that natalie asked to dance with me. he was a nice guy and kind of cute, but he was obviously not into dancing with me. i left around midnight and just felt awful until i was asleep. i had expected the night to be fun and a bit of an ego boost... but instead it was depressing and awkward and i ended my night feeling like the ugly, fat, socially retarded girl that no one asked to prom. i mean, i may as well have pooped in the middle of the dance floor the way everyone (except leandra, natalie and a nice guy named brandon) was avoiding me. sigh. i probably won't be going back to salsa night. aside from the obvious reasons, i'm also disappointed because i really WANTED to learn how to dance - it looked like so much fun! blah.
on to better, more cheerful things! yesterday before the game, i went to right by nature for some groceries and dinner. i loaded up on avocados (2 for $1! sushi tonight!!), blackberries, blueberries, sweet potato chips, and a grape kombucha tea. for dinner, i raided their hot and cold bars and ended up with the bargain of the night - flank steak (i was in a rare red-meat mood), rosemary roasted potatoes, garlic noodles, some sort of chinese coleslaw or something, elbow mac with greens, and a lovely spinach salad with asiago, dried cranberries, whole roasted pecans and green goddess dressing for a whopping $3.57!! this is like the best deal ever! i was pleasantly full (though not TOO full) and it only cost $3.57... amazing. i tried the grape kombucha tea with lunch today and i have to say, i'm not really impressed. maybe that's just because lori said it smells like sewer... i dunno. but anyways, about 90 seconds ago i shook it a little and opened up the top because i'm mildly autistic and now there's niagara grape kombucha wonder drink all over my keyboard, desk, blotter, and floor. right where fermented tea belongs. holla!
i'm really not feeling the gym tonight, but i feel like i have to go since i haven't hit it up since monday. i'm really excited about making avocado sushi for dinner, though! tomorrow my mom and i are planning to meet up either at ross park mall or pittsburgh mills to do some pre-cruise shopping. by pre-cruise shopping, i mean that she might buy something, but i most likely will not since i have negative dollars in my bank account even after today's payday. it'll be nice to get out and do something besides go to the gym, though, and i'll likely get at least one meal out of her. :) and sunday...
pittsburgh's goin to the superbowl!
ok, i'll readily admit that i'm not the biggest football fan. but when i DO watch football, the steelers are obviously my team. i just have a hard time sitting still through hours of tv, especially when it gets so tense sometimes! so i usually tune in for the last 5 minutes or so... but i'm going to make an effort to check in periodically during the game to see how dem stillers are doing. :)
happy friday, everyone!
last night after our volleyball game (we won, naturally), i ventured into downtown pittsburgh for salsa night at bossa nova at the invitation of natalie and leandra. while it was good to be sociable for the night instead of just heading home, i will say this: it's terribly difficult to go out when your friends are all zoolanders - ridiculously good-looking. although she doesn't try at all, natalie is easily one of the most gorgeous people i know. and what really sucks is that she's super nice and smart, and not stuck-up in the least, so it's impossible to hate her. leandra is also pretty, and she's colombian, so she has the accent on her side. even though i had just finished my game, i had changed my clothes, i didn't smell, and i didn't think i looked awful... the reason i had decided to go was that natalie told me that guys will come over and ask you to dance all night and that it's not a big deal if you don't know what you're doing - everyone's just there to have a good time. well, sure, that's likely true in natalie's case, but it's certainly not the case for average-looking people such as myself. guys were asking her to dance all night... and when we were hanging out and talking, guys would literally shove past me to ask her to dance. not one guy asked me to dance. i did dance one dance, quite awkwardly i might add, with a guy that natalie asked to dance with me. he was a nice guy and kind of cute, but he was obviously not into dancing with me. i left around midnight and just felt awful until i was asleep. i had expected the night to be fun and a bit of an ego boost... but instead it was depressing and awkward and i ended my night feeling like the ugly, fat, socially retarded girl that no one asked to prom. i mean, i may as well have pooped in the middle of the dance floor the way everyone (except leandra, natalie and a nice guy named brandon) was avoiding me. sigh. i probably won't be going back to salsa night. aside from the obvious reasons, i'm also disappointed because i really WANTED to learn how to dance - it looked like so much fun! blah.
on to better, more cheerful things! yesterday before the game, i went to right by nature for some groceries and dinner. i loaded up on avocados (2 for $1! sushi tonight!!), blackberries, blueberries, sweet potato chips, and a grape kombucha tea. for dinner, i raided their hot and cold bars and ended up with the bargain of the night - flank steak (i was in a rare red-meat mood), rosemary roasted potatoes, garlic noodles, some sort of chinese coleslaw or something, elbow mac with greens, and a lovely spinach salad with asiago, dried cranberries, whole roasted pecans and green goddess dressing for a whopping $3.57!! this is like the best deal ever! i was pleasantly full (though not TOO full) and it only cost $3.57... amazing. i tried the grape kombucha tea with lunch today and i have to say, i'm not really impressed. maybe that's just because lori said it smells like sewer... i dunno. but anyways, about 90 seconds ago i shook it a little and opened up the top because i'm mildly autistic and now there's niagara grape kombucha wonder drink all over my keyboard, desk, blotter, and floor. right where fermented tea belongs. holla!
i'm really not feeling the gym tonight, but i feel like i have to go since i haven't hit it up since monday. i'm really excited about making avocado sushi for dinner, though! tomorrow my mom and i are planning to meet up either at ross park mall or pittsburgh mills to do some pre-cruise shopping. by pre-cruise shopping, i mean that she might buy something, but i most likely will not since i have negative dollars in my bank account even after today's payday. it'll be nice to get out and do something besides go to the gym, though, and i'll likely get at least one meal out of her. :) and sunday...
pittsburgh's goin to the superbowl!

you think i ain't worth a dollar but i feel like a millionaire
maybe it's the fact that i've reached one of my goals, or maybe it's the freezing weather, but i've actually felt skinny-ish for the first time since probably before high school. i don't know why, but it seems like the colder it gets, the thinner i feel... maybe it's because i'm not all hot and uncomfortable, but i wonder if other people get the same way? or maybe it's just because this recent cold spell has coincided with the fact that i now weigh about what i did when i started college. yay! this means that in the year and a half since i got "sick", i've lost about 35-40 pounds!
in an effort to "forcefully" curb my appetite (by ensuring that i don't have enough money to buy food, haha), i took advantage to circuit city's bankruptcy and stocked up on some necessities: dance dance revolution hottest party 2 for the wii, mario kart for the wii, a huge bundle of 100 cd-rs and a package of 50 dvd-rs. i realize that the sales will get better and better since they plan to close their doors in march, but i figured that the really good stuff like wii games will be gone asap. i spent about $120 on all that stuff, which was a savings of about $70 from regular-price.
after wasting february's food allowance on video games, i headed over to the gym for 65 minutes of cardio, lots of stretching, and some ab work. i was going to lift weights, but wasn't really feeling it. however, i did learn that saturday afternoon is a great time to go to the gym - lots of eye-candy. :)
friday night was not such a great gym time - it was a misogynistic sausage-fest. there's a belly-dancing class friday evenings, and though i was considering going to it, i'm glad i didn't - there were old and old-er men literally surrounding the studio room talking about the different girls. i'm not usually easily offended, but there was something about the openness with which they were talking about these girls that really got to me. it was really really disgusting. i don't mind if the gym is full of guys as long as they're doing their own thing and not being pigs. i don't know if i'll go back on a friday night. :(
at volleyball thursday night, it was evident that i need new shoes BADLY. there's zero tread on my shoes and i was all over the court - and not in a good way. i couldn't stop slipping no matter how hard i tried to plant myself in one spot. so, in the spirit of eliminating march's food allowance, i enjoyed a clearance sale at dsw and got a pair of asics running shoes for $47. i know some people say that you should have sport-specific shoes, but i can't afford both volleyball shoes AND running shoes... and let's face it, i run about 4-5 days a week while i play volleyball only 1 day a week (probably 2 days a week starting next season). i'm pretty excited about them... i was literally running through the store, testing them. :)
oh, and we won our volleyball game... but we lost 1 out of the 3 games in the match. so i'm wondering now - since we're 2-0 for matches, but 5-1 for games, can we say we're undefeated? i feel like losing that one game makes us defeated, but match-wise we're undefeated. it's confusing. it shouldn't matter, but i liked saying we were undefeated all last season...
i'm gonna head in to bed. 11 pm on a saturday and all i can think about is sleeping... sigh. i'm so 70 years old.

your friends are only make believe
i'm writing this as i sit on my freezing ceramic-tiled kitchen floor. no good reason why i'm sitting here except that the light was on in the kitchen and i didn't feel like turning a light on somewhere else. i'm energy-efficient like that. also, for the first time ever, i'm able to write this post from my kitchen floor because (drumroll please!) i pimped my house and now i'm rollin wireless-style. but wait! that's not the biggest news! the day i decided to be a big girl and go wireless was also the same day that i bought my wii!!
that's right, folks. i have a wii. and it changes EVERYTHING.
lindsay, you ask, have you become a nerdy gamer chick in just a few short days? (no offense to anyone who reads this who is a gamer - i mean it in the most stereotypical way.) negator, i have not become a nerdy gamer chick. ok, maybe a teensy bit. but what the wii really changes is my schedule, and on at least 2 levels so far. first off, i feel like i HAVE to play with my wii for at least a little while each day (hehe) to get my money's worth, so my already-packed schedule has taken a dramatic hit. i'm still forcing myself to hit up the gym at least 4 days a week, so as a result i'm going to bed a little later... and making my way into work a little later as well. it's not a pretty cycle.
on the other hand, my wii is changing my schedule because people want to hang out with me now. :) natalie's coming over tomorrow after work to play and my parents are expecting to play sometime soon. i feel like it would benefit me to impose a "wii tax" - you can play with my wii all night long if you feed me. i think that sounds reasonable. i'll begin implementing with my parents.
another benefit of the wii is that now i have more conversation points... i think i spent about an hour over the past 2 days talking to my boss about the wii and she let me borrow one of their games for a few days (raving rabbids). everyone seems to have a wii story. it's like its own little underground community. :)
anyways, while i was taking a break last night from my new hobby, i pushed myself a bit too far at the gym. it was the busiest i've ever seen it monday night, all the treadmills were taken, and all that was left was one elliptical and the recumbent bikes. being adventurous, i opted for the elliptical. i think the most i had ever done on the elliptical was 13 minutes the previous saturday. in full disclosure, i didn't plan on staying on it long - i planned to warm up for maybe 10 minutes and then hopefully a treadmill would open up... but i'm a little ocd with mileage and times and calories, so i ended up staying on for 35 minutes, 3.05 miles. you'd think this would have been enough... my legs were burning and i was wonderfully sweaty. but i'm a little bull-headed, so i decided that since my intention that night was to run, gosh darn it i was going to run. i was on the treadmill for 40 minutes... but i only ran 1/2 mile and walked the rest of the time because i felt like i had torn something in my legs. it was weird (and painful, obviously), but it was almost as though i could feel the muscle tear away from the bone. 520 calories burned off, i decided it was time to head home and then i took a hot bath. i had planned on going to the gym tonight, but decided i needed a rest day instead. since natalie's coming over tomorrow night, i might try to go to the gym in the morning, but it'll be iffy. maybe i can convince myself by allowing myself a starbucks on the way to work if i go to the gym in the am... hmm...
that's about all i have to report... oh, and i forgot to mention it in my last post, but we won our volleyball game thursday night and we are now 3-0. it was a cake walk, and hopefully this week will be similarly easy. however, this week's team is also 3-0... but the season's early and we're a solid team, so it's anyone's game.
wish me luck for getting up in the morning to work out!
