Drivin away from the wreck of the day and the light's always red in the rearview

Holy crap, what a way to start the day!

The bad luck from my last post continued this weekend and into this morning, but luckily nothing absolutely disastrous happened… but disaster was just barely avoided. I’ll start with the good weekend stuff first, though:

Friday after work I went to Trashmart to buy the pretty red bike I’d been eyeing up for a few weeks… except they didn’t have it in stock! I was getting a bike this weekend no matter what it took, so I changed my disappointed sourpuss face into my hopeful face and bought a 2-bike trunk rack for my car. Since I had cleaned out/eaten about ¾ of the contents of my freezer over the past few months and since Trashmart has really cheap frozen Kashi/Healthy Choice/Lean Cuisine meals and paninis, I splurged and decided to stock up. When I got to the register, the total came to exactly $100.00. (The bike rack was about $40… and the food I got will last me for a looooong time) You’d think such a perfect number would be a sign of good things to come… and in a sense it was because Saturday I went on the great 2009 bike hunt through Monroeville!

I woke up early on Saturday and made a HUGE batch of juice for the upcoming week’s smoothies – celery, carrots, apples, oranges, grapefruits, pineapple, mangoes, grapes, strawberries, cantaloupe, and kiwis. This mixture will be combined with bananas, raspberries, blueberries, more mangoes, spinach, and protein powder for super smoothies. It seems funny to me, and I know other people have discovered the same thing, but I feel much more awake when I have my super smoothies in the morning – they wake me up way more than coffee or tea, and I almost never crave sweets now. Plus, I just feel absolutely amazing when I drink them and they’re super yummy! They don’t taste AT ALL like veggies (I even made some people at work try the mix, against their better judgment… they readily agreed that they’re awesome!), and the carrot and celery add a very subtle sweetness to the smoothies.

Anyways, back to Saturday. I had big plans for the day since it was GORGEOUS outside. I went to the gym, ran for the first time in weeks since my knee’s been killing me, lifted weights like a bodybuilder; and then made the bike circuit. First up was Target, where I found my original second choice – a women’s Schwinn Jaguar bike for $149.99. This bike is nice and it caries two reputable names – Schwinn and Jaguar. Plus, I thought it’d be cool to say I bought a Jaguar this weekend… but the consumer reviews weren’t so awesome. Determined to find my first choice and to not make any hasty decisions, I then went to Dick’s and Dunham’s. Dick’s was terrible since their cheapest bike was on sale for $229… Dunham’s just didn’t have much of a selection at all… and then I realized I’d forgotten about Kmart! Why not? What does it hurt to look? Well, good thing I did, because I found the winner of the day. Ladies and Gentlemen, my new best friend is a… Kent Glendale CS Comfort Cruiser bike. It’s a really pretty blue, a cruiser, has 7 gears, a comfy seat, and got better consumer reviews than the Jaguar bike. Plus, it was the same price… and I was already in Kmart and didn’t feel like going back to Target…

I made my way home and went on a short inaugural bike ride around the neighborhood… then came back, mowed what felt like 5 miles of uphill grass (over 1 hour of mowing at a HR of 170!!), and went for another quickie spin around the nabe… then came back, got a drink of water, adjusted the handlebars/seat/reflectors/gears to my liking (normal people would have done all that BEFORE riding it), then went for another longer ride around Wilkins Twp and Turtle Creek. I LOVE my bike!! It’s so comfy and smooth, and it doesn’t feel like I have to try as hard to ride it as I had to with the old crappy hand-me-down bike.

Needless to say, with all the running/lifting/shopping/riding/cutting/riding/riding, I’d worked up quite an appetite. I made my first-ever batch of baked penne, complete with ricotta (my dad hates ricotta, so I never get the real thing at my parents’ house), fresh mozzarella, and garlic bread fashioned out of garlic foccaccia. The penne was good, but nothing too special. The garlic bread, on the other hand, was incredible. I could have easily made a meal out of just that, but I restrained myself and froze most of the rest. I can’t wait till I have it again!

Sunday was a dreary day (thank goodness we had at least one nice day for the weekend!), so I used it to gourmandize my breakfast. I made apple-grapefruit-orange juice, coffee, cinnamon-nutmeg French toast out of the leftover Easter bread from my grandma’s, turkey bacon, and freshly-sliced homefries with green peppers. YUM! Don’t worry, as I do with most of my Sunday breakfast splurges, I only ate about half (less than half, actually) and saved the rest for this morning’s breakfast and lunch. It was all really good, but the star was definitely the homefries with peppers. I don’t normally bother with peppers simply because I don’t usually have them on hand… and it just doesn’t seem worth it to take the time to wash them and cut them when I’m doing a gazillion other things. Lucky for me, Lisa from work had heard me talking about my juice extractor and wordlessly dropped a huge bag of chopped veggies onto my desk one day this past week. I used the carrots and celery sticks in my weekly juice blend and was able to use up the already-chopped green peppers in my homefries. I still have mushrooms and cauliflower if anyone wants them… I don’t like either one.

After indulging in my extravagant breakfast, I relaxed and went to work on clearing up the memory on my computer. When I was home for Easter, my aunt and uncle had said something about me using their digital copies of DVDs they had since they didn’t want them. I went over to their house to load them onto my computer, but had to stop with 2 movies to go because my computer was mysteriously out of memory… even though it shouldn’t have been. So when I finally sat down to check it all out, I noticed I had my iTunes and iPhoto stuff in about 3 different places – not necessary. I copied everything to my external HD for back-up (that needed done anyways – it had been over a year!) and set about deleting a bunch of duplicates. Also, I put my new movies on DVDs, although I can only use them in my computer since they’re data DVDs. I don’t understand how all of that works, but oh well. I’m proud to say that I now have over 24 GB free on my computer, so I’m free to download as much as I like (for a while)! I think I did screw something up, though – when I went to update my iPod with a new playlist, the computer told me neither the computer nor the iPod was authorized to play anything I’d downloaded from iTunes. What?! Luckily, most of the stuff I listen to wasn’t downloaded from iTunes, but still. What on earth? I tried to authorize the computer, but it wouldn’t let me… so who knows what I did to it… Any ideas?

Last night I made my way to the gym for Sunday night volleyball and for once, I played like a demon! My serves were great, my passes and sets were good, and I even got a few hits in! And not just dinky “accidental” hits, but real full-on solid hits! Approach, swing, and everything! It was AWESOME! However, once I got home, I noticed that my knee was hurting a LOT, so I’ve been trying to rest it as much as possible before tonight’s game.

On my way in to work, I VERY NARROWLY avoided disaster/death. I was on the stretch of Penn Ave in Wilkinsburg practically right in front of the Wendy’s, driving in the right lane when a few cars up someone in the left lane wanted to turn into Wendy’s. I was literally right beside a huge black SUV when out of the blue the SUV driver decided he didn’t want to wait for someone to turn, so he came into my lane – WHILE I WAS STILL RIGHT BESIDE HIM! With no time to think, I swerved completely onto the curb and almost hit a phone pole. There’s so much traffic on that road during rush hour that any sane person would have known there was someone beside them and that they’d have to wait and look before moving into another lane. When I got off the curb and back onto the road, the SUV was still in front of me and I got a spectacular look at his license plate before he swerved in front of someone else – so if you see anyone driving around Pittsburgh in a black SUV with the license plate “MIRACLE” (or maybe it was “MIRACL”… I can’t remember if it had the “E” at the end… nice license plate, I guess this person realizes it’s a miracle they’re still alive?), feel free to show them that they’re #1, if you know what I’m saying.
When I got to work, I inspected my car just to be sure there wasn’t any damage, and my wheels/tires are all sorts of screwed up on the passenger side. I called my mom, who’s also my insurance agent, and she told me there wasn’t any point in submitting a claim since I have a deductible. And I’m pretty sure that since there wasn’t a real “accident,” the police wouldn’t be able to do anything. Still, what a jerk. What a way to start the day…

On the bright side, when I have a bad start to the day, I usually have a spectacular night at volleyball… so I’m hoping that’s the case tonight. Our game’s in Greenfield/Squirrel Hill instead of Downtown tonight, so win or lose (ahem, WIN!), we’re treating ourselves to Mineo’s for some pizza after the game! I think I’m almost as excited for dinner as I am for our game!

Here’s hoping your day is/was a lot better than mine!

geezers need excitement

sorry if anyone saw last night's post before i edited it this morning. i feel a lot better and much less paranoid. i just needed some time to process everything and calm myself down. let's hope it doesn't happen again. :)

for the rest of you who didn't see the post, let's just say it wasn't pretty and it certainly wasn't necessary to share with the world. the section to which i'm referring has been deleted, so no need to read through yesterday's post to see what i'm talking about. trust me, it's been deleted for the best.

i woke up at a respectable hour today (as opposed to yesterday when i slept in really late) and was craving a diner breakfast. given my current financial situation, restaurant meals of any kind are an unnecessary indulgence, so i made do with what i had. i used up the last of my frozen bacon (5 slices), a can of sliced white potatoes, made 2 slices ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast, and made a pot of coffee. before you start recommending cardiologists for my impending heart attack, let me say that i split everything in half (ok, except the toast and the coffee) and made breakfast for 2 mornings. :) i am currently STUFFED, 3 hours later. it sure was tasty, though!

right now i'm waiting on garage door george to come back and fix my opener. he was supposed to show up at noon, but it's now 1:15 and still no george. i called my dad since he arranged the whole thing, but he seems to have a very nonchalant attitude towards it all - "give the guy a break. maybe he's just running late." umm... an hour and 15 minutes late? usually if people are going to be THAT late, they at least call. no word from george yet. i'm pretty tired of sitting around the house and i have PLENTY of errands to run, so i'm about ready to just leave. i'd call george myself, but i don't have a number for him... and i'm not sure which company he was from. it all just seems kinda shady...

anyways, i think i'm going to head out. i have to go to the library, go to the grocery store, and go to the gym (not necessarily in that order). tonight i'm making ground turkey and black bean tacos for dinner - i'm super excited. too excited. i need a life. :)

later peeps!

mommy, wow! i'm a big kid now!

i thought yoga was supposed to help your balance?
this morning (and all of today, actually) was wonderful! i woke up super early (for me) to meet lori at denny's for our free grand slam breakfasts. i got there around 7, about 15 minutes early, and it worked out really well because there was a 15-20 minute wait. i don't think i've ever seen so many people at any restaurant - not even when there's been an hour and a half wait. to their credit, the experience was a great one. the turnover was very quick considering the circumstances, the food was good and hot, and the service was good as well. truthfully, i expected them to just give us our food and our bill and never check back, but i was pleasantly surprised when we were checked on several times, our coffee was refilled and we got more creamers and ketchup very expediently. all in all, thumbs up denny's!

however, back to the recurrent theme of "i gots no skillz" (i should create a new blog page to chronicle my fails at life), i bit the dust in the denny's parking lot. actually, it may have been the arby's parking lot, as they are joined. boom, right on my left knee. ouch. i was a big girl and went straight to work. for that, i am proud of myself. especially since my boss said i should go home (yeah, i'm pretty sure she was kidding). mommy, wow! i'm a big kid now!

last night i went to the gym and did some running and walking and then an hour of what should have been balance-control-enhancing yoga. perhaps i used all my balance on the mat and none was left over this morning? in any case, it was good and fun and i felt pretty spectacular afterwards, except my stomach felt like it was going into labor about a mile into my run and continued to feel like labor pains through yoga and when i got home. i don't know what my deal is these days with the excruciating stomach pains after running, but i wish it would all stop. i like running. i like walking, weights, yoga, classes, and even the elliptical sometimes. i'm not a huge fan of going into mysterious false-labor every time i go to the gym, though. :(

that's about it for now. i'm going to take my battered knee and my bruised pride to tanning and then i'm gonna work it out at the gym. i'm tempted to go to yoga tomorrow, thus breaking my strongly-enforced "no exercise on volleyball-eve" rule, but i'm not sure yet. i feel like i need to get all my gym time in before the cruise. on the other hand, we're playing our potentially most formidable team on thursday at volleyball, so i should really reserve my energy. i guess we'll just have to wait and see...

everybody hurts... sometimes.

ouch.

good news, folks! i was able to secure a spot in yoga class this morning. it was awesome and i'm probably going to hit it up again tomorrow night after work and tanning. i was pretty stable for most of the class but when the instructor had us move from warrior 1 to warrior 3 i lost it on both sides. literally fell over... it was quite hilarious and i couldn't stop laughing. the girl beside me was also laughing. good thing i can laugh at myself! the class lasted an hour and i felt like i got a better workout than last time. but is 1 hour enough for beastly linds? heck no. i changed from yoga pants to running shorts and blasted through 33 minutes running and then 32 minutes walking at 3.7 mph/7% incline. when i felt i had sufficiently depleted myself of all energy for the rest of the day, i had burned upwards of 700 calories. it was a good workout to say the least. however...
i'm having some very unpleasant lasting effects from my workout. my stomach has been cramping up almost since i got home and no matter which position i'm in, it feels like i'm going into labor. (well, for all i know.) i mean, these are really intense stomach cramps! and they didn't start until after my workout - i was fine before and during. i did some web research and apparently i'm not the only person with this issue, but no one seems to know what it is. so i'm taking it easy for the rest of the night. obviously, since i can barely move. raise your hand if you're looking forward to getting up tomorrow! ...bueller? ...bueller?

breakfast this morning was an enticing combo of 2 slices ezekiel cinnamon raisin toast, half a grapefruit and coffee. kept me going through the workout, but then i was famished! when i got home i made myself the perfect lunch for a 14 degree snowy day - grilled cheese made with provolone, colby and some ham with select harvest tomato basil soup. yum-o. dinner tonight is going to be either leftover chicken marsala from wednesday night or my leftover spaghetti warehouse chicken parm & pasta. i think i should probably concentrate on scarfing down the chicken marsala before it goes bad... so chicken marsala with a spinach salad with woodstock dressing and crumbled goat cheese. i'm so excited i'm literally salivating. i love me some chevre! oh, and my evening snack is becoming a tradition - a glass of milk with freshly grated nutmeg and cinnamon. i've been really surprised lately at how this calms me down before bed. in fact, i didn't have any last night and i laid awake for hours before falling asleep. that's probably all in my head, but i'll take whatever help i can get.

gripe of the day is... why on earth do sports bra manufacturers make B/C cup the standard?! this is so incredibly frustrating! i was searching for a particular sports bra online and it just amazes me that all of the good-support, bigger-cup sports bras are priced a good $20 or more above "average"-cup sports bras. really?? the women with the bigger boobs need the sports bras a lot more than the mosquito-bite chicks, so it's unfair to me that a good-fitting sports bra should be so inaccessible to most people. wake up, manufacturers. we're not all size 2s and B cups!
anyways, a few months ago i got an AWESOME sports bra from tj maxx - the brand is moving comfort. it has hooks in the back and adjustable straps, just like a regular bra, and the fit is AMAZING. seriously, i've never had a sports bra fit so well before and it has fantabulous support, which i obviously need for running and volleyball. since discovering this bra's awesomeness, i've been to every tj maxx/marshall's/filene's in the greater pittsburgh area in search of another one and i've come up empty in every single store. i amazon-ed tonight and guess what? i found the bra but the reason why i can't find it in stores is that it's been discontinued. for the life of me, i can't figure out why a discontinued bra would cost so much ($27.50 was the cheapest for my size)... wouldn't retailers want to get rid of it and price it cheaply? whatever. i bought 2 from sierra trading post and now i have something to look forward to at work all week since they're being shipped there. :)

plans for tomorrow include work, tanning, some elliptical/treadmill OR cardio kickboxing, and yoga class. i'm totally considering returning to cardio kickboxing. i went once a few months ago, and though i finished the entire class, it was the most strenuous workout i'd had. i think i'm probably better equipped to deal with it now and i'd probably benefit from it... and yoga would be a great cool-down. but who knows... it'll probably just be elliptical/treadmill and then yoga. i probably won't be as hardcore as today, but i liked the fact that i really got a GOOD workout in, and a total body workout. i just wish my tummy would stop hurting so much! :(

all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to if u seek amy

i've sadly become obsessed with the britney spears' song "if u seek amy." i seriously cannot stop listening to it. and the lyrics don't even make sense with the alternative meaning (hint: say "if u seek amy" fast), but the rhythm of it is just so gosh darn catchy. sure, some people may make fun of britney, but for some reason i've really rooted for her over the years. and i've always secretly liked her songs... hey, they're great to work out to!

i woke up nice and early today to relax and eat a nice breakfast (2 pieces ezekiel cinnamon raisin bread and a fruit bowl of strawberries, blueberries, blackberries and pom seeds with mint yogi tea and agave nectar) before going to the 11 am yoga class at la fitness. i arrived with a few minutes to spare, but there were a lot of people there and very few spots were open. since i'm a complete yoga novice, i placed my mat between 2 people in the back row. now, there was plenty of room on either side of me for the two other people and the woman to my left didn't say a word. the older woman on my right, however, decided that she needed more leg room. as i was laying my mat down, she told me that there wasn't enough room and that i'd need to go to the front of the room. "there's plenty of room up there for you," she said and nodded her head towards the front. i looked at her and at the space between her mats (AMPLE space) and said something like "really? there's a lot of space..." and just to be difficult, she stretched her leg out and touched my mat with her big toe and looked up at me. i just raised my eyebrows, rolled up my mat and huffed "whatever, lady" before going out the door. i totally understand wanting to have enough room, but THERE WAS. i was soooo mad. i had been looking forward to yoga since monday night's class. i realize i could've just gone up front, but i don't like being front and center when i don't know what i'm doing. i think it was just a little bit uncalled for. so anyways, i ended up doing a smörgåsbord of gym exercises instead. i played basketball for about 20 minutes, then did 15 minutes on the recumbent bike, a little over 17 minutes on the elliptical, and about 37 minutes on the treadmill. i would've kept going on the treadmill and done weights, but one of the front desk attendants informed me i had a visitor...

mom and dad! they had apparently been calling my phone for the past hour and a half because they were coming to visit and when i didn't answer, they showed up at the most obvious place - the gym! i have to admit, when the girl said i had a visitor, i thought it was the cops. haha. i have no idea why i'd think that since i haven't done anything, but that was the first thought through my head. tee hee.

so i left the gym and then met my parents at my house. mom brought me 2 of the books she got for christmas (marley & me and twilight) and they brought me a yummy surprise - tonymisu from moio's!! we stayed in for a while and i showed them both how to play the wii... my mom tried wii fit, wii sports, and ddr. my dad tried a little bit of ddr but he was terrible at it. :) my mom seemed to like it, especially the wii fit, but my dad maintains that it's too expensive so they're not getting one. maybe i'll create a mii for her for the next time they come... we ended up in the strip for late lunch/early dinner. my dad really wanted to go to deluca's but we got there just a little too late. we walked around for a bit and then dad decided we were going to our old standby - the spaghetti warehouse. awesome, as always. but oddly enough, the hostess picked up a kid's menu for me... i'm 26. what am i supposed to do with a kid's menu? anyways, we each got trio dinners - apps, dinners (+salad/soup), and dessert. i got the chicken parm with pasta, a salad with balsamic and mozzarella sticks and ate about 1/3 of it. we all ended up with tiramisu, so my tonymisu will have to be tomorrow's treat. :)

after dinner we went to a new organic natural foods store that we passed on the way to the warehouse... right by nature. i'd swear the skies parted and pure sunlight was shining onto the place. it. was. awesome. ok, it was pretty much like whole foods/east end food co-op, but a bit cheaper. AND (important for in the strip) they give you a free parking token with a purchase. it was really nice inside... they had a really large selection of everything (but whole foods has a larger selection of produce), and their nut butter selection was nothing short of spectacular. sunbutter, almond butter, cashew butter, soynut butter, mystery butter, all kinds of wonderful butters. and they also have a lovely assortment of greek yogurt, including some i had never seen before. and their salad bar, both hot and cold... pretty good-looking stuff and $4/lb cheaper than whole foods!! PLUS they have a coffee bar that serves la prima coffee (YUMMMMM!). their coffee bean section wasn't super exciting but they have more teas than i have seen anywhere outside of nyc. seriously, their tea selection is incredible. my dad didn't seem too thrilled by the place (he calls it "organic crap" and won't eat anything that says "organic" on it... so weird), so i was a little rushed. i ended up with some hickory smoked turkey jerky and a strawberry "fruit leather." i tried the jerky and although it was quite tasty, i still prefer trader joe's teriyaki turkey jerky. tj's turkey jerky is also about $1.20 cheaper... but i loved this store and i think i'll make it a thursday night before or after volleyball treat since we play pretty close to the strip. for anyone that's interested, they're open 7 days a week 8am - 9pm.

i considered going back to the gym tonight after my parents left, but by the time i'd have gotten there, changed clothes, etc, it just wouldn't have been worth it. instead i might do some wii fit yoga (since i missed out on yoga this morning, haha)... or maybe i'll just hang out and relax. i'm gonna try to wake up even earlier tomorrow so that i can get to the gym with plenty of time to spare - yoga starts at 11 am again; this time with monday's instructor (yay!)... wish me luck in getting a spot! :)
